Camel Safaris, Desert Forts & Blue Cities: Exploring Rajasthan Beyond the Golden Triangle

Jaipur is where Rajasthan officially begins for most travellers — and it earns its reputation. Built in 1727 by Maharaja Jai Singh II on a precise grid plan that was revolutionary for its era, and painted its famous terracotta-pink in 1876 for a royal visit, the city is a living monument to Rajput ambition and sophistication.

The hilltop Amber Fort, connected to the city by a winding road overlooking Maota Lake, is one of the finest examples of Rajput architecture in existence. The City Palace still houses the royal family in its private quarters. And the Hawa Mahal — the Palace of Winds — with its 953 honeycomb windows, stands as one of the most photographed facades in all of India.

But Jaipur also rewards exploration beyond its famous monuments. The bazaars of the old city — selling block-printed textiles, blue pottery, gemstones and silver jewellery — are among the finest traditional markets in Rajasthan.

If there is one city on this itinerary that surprises travellers most, it is Bikaner. Sitting at the edge of the Thar Desert, it receives a fraction of the visitors that Jaipur or Jaisalmer attract — which makes it one of the most authentic experiences on the entire route. This is an offbeat Rajasthan destination in the truest sense.

Junagarh Fort is Bikaner's centrepiece — and arguably one of the most underrated forts in all of Rajasthan. Unlike most Rajput forts that occupy high ground, Junagarh was built at ground level in 1589 and never conquered in its entire history. Its interiors — a succession of elaborately decorated palaces, each built by a different maharaja — are extraordinary in their detail and state of preservation.

The old city surrounding the fort is a labyrinth of havelis — traditional merchant mansions with ornate facades — that have changed little in three centuries. Walking these lanes with a local guide is one of the most quietly memorable experiences on the journey.

No destination on this itinerary generates more anticipation — or delivers more completely — than Jaisalmer. Rising from the flat expanse of the Thar Desert like a mirage of golden sandstone, the city is simultaneously ancient and alive. Jaisalmer Fort is one of the last inhabited forts in the world — roughly 3,000 people still live within its medieval walls, and it has been continuously occupied since its founding in 1156.

But for many travellers, the defining experience of Jaisalmer is not the fort itself — it is the camel safari into the Sam Sand Dunes, the most visited dune system near the city. A private evening excursion by camel into the dunes, timed to arrive at the crest as the sun descends, is one of the most extraordinary experiences available anywhere in India. The silence of the desert at dusk — the sky shifting from gold to amber to violet — belongs to no particular century.

Beyond the dunes, Jaisalmer rewards slow exploration. The Patwon Ki Haveli — a cluster of five havelis built by a wealthy merchant family in the 19th century — contains some of the finest stone latticework in Rajasthan. The city's narrow lanes, lined with yellow sandstone buildings that glow in the afternoon sun, are unlike anything else in India.

The drive from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur passes through the heart of the Thar Desert — a landscape of scrub, sand and the occasional roadside chai stop that feels genuinely timeless. Jodhpur announces itself dramatically: Mehrangarh Fort appears on the horizon long before the city does, a sheer cliff of stone rising 120 metres above the blue-washed old town below.

Mehrangarh is widely considered the finest fort in Rajasthan — a judgement that is difficult to argue with. Its walls are up to 36 metres thick in places. Its museum contains one of the best collections of Rajput artefacts in India — royal palanquins, miniature paintings, ornate howdahs and weapons that tell the story of a martial culture at its most refined. The views from the ramparts over the blue city and the desert beyond are extraordinary at any time of day.

The blue houses that give Jodhpur its nickname were originally painted indigo to deter insects and regulate temperature — a practical solution that became a defining visual identity. Walking the lanes of the old city beneath the fort wall, with the blue rooftops cascading away below you, is one of the great urban experiences in all of Rajasthan.

After the arid drama of Jaisalmer and Jodhpur, arriving in Udaipur feels like surfacing for air. The city is built around a series of interconnected lakes — Pichola, Fateh Sagar, Udai Sagar — and the contrast with the desert cities you have just left is total. White marble palaces rise from the water's edge. Narrow old city streets are lined with art galleries, rooftop cafes and workshops making miniature paintings in a tradition that is centuries old.

The City Palace — a vast complex built over four centuries by successive maharanas of the Mewar dynasty — is the largest royal palace complex in Rajasthan. Its elevated position above Lake Pichola and its interiors, which combine Rajput, Mughal and European influences, make it one of the most visually rich buildings in the entire country.

An evening boat ride on Lake Pichola — past the Jag Mandir island palace and the illuminated City Palace — is the perfect way to close a Rajasthan journey. The reflection of the palace in the still water at dusk, with the Aravalli Hills behind it, is an image that stays with you long after you leave.
