Day 5: Varanasi Departure

Pilgrims who have done the standard circuits and want to go deeper. Families from any part of India visiting North India's sacred heartland for the first time or the fifth time - this route has something you will not have done before. Devotees with a connection to Shakti traditions - Naimisaranya's Lalita Devi Peetha is one of the most significant in India and almost unknown outside serious pilgrimage circles. Anyone who wants to come back from a journey having genuinely experienced something, not just visited it.

Sattvic Meals: For pilgrims observing sattvic vegetarian food - onion-free, garlic-free - throughout, TTI arranges accordingly at each destination. Mention this at booking. The yatra begins at the first meal.

BEST - OCTOBER TO MARCH

Pleasant weather across all cities. Best for comfortable temple walking and ghat visits. Book early for December–January when pilgrimage traffic is highest.

WORTH KNOWING - KUMBH MELA, PRAYAGRAJ

When Kumbh Mela falls, Prayagraj draws tens of millions. Spiritually extraordinary — logistically demanding. TTI will advise if your dates overlap and plan accordingly.

PLAN AHEAD - RAM NAVAMI

After the new temple consecration, Ram Navami draws enormous crowds. If you travel during this period, build in extra time for darshan. TTI will guide you on timing.

WORTH KNOWING - KARTIK MONTH, VARANASI

Kartik is Varanasi's most sacred month - powerful and very crowded. If you want this experience, book several months in advance.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Chakra Tirtha, Naimisaranya - where Lord Vishnu's Sudarshan Chakra created a sacred kund, considered the spiritual centre of the earth
  • Lalita Devi Temple - one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas, where Sati's heart fell
  • Vyasa Gaddi - the seat where Sage Vyasa narrated the Puranas and composed the Mahabharata
  • Dadhichi Kund - where sage Dadhichi dissolved his bones for Indra's weapon; bathing here equals bathing in all holy rivers
  • Hanuman Garhi and Ram Mandir darshan - Lord Ram's birthplace, Ayodhya
  • Boat ride at Triveni Sangam, Prayagraj - where Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati converge
  • Sunrise boat ride on the Ganga, Kashi Vishwanath, Sankat Mochan, Tulsi Manas Mandir

Travel Itinerary

Full day excursion → Chakra Tirtha → Lalita Devi → Vyasa Gaddi → Dadhichi Kund → Return to Lucknow

Drive 90 km from Lucknow to Naimisaranya on the banks of the Gomti River. Visit Chakra Tirtha for a ritual dip, Lalita Devi Shakti Peetha, Vyasa Gaddi, Dadhichi Kund and Hanuman Garhi.
All five sites sit within 2 km of each other. This is a place of deep, unhurried sanctity - rarely crowded, genuinely ancient. Return to Lucknow for the night.

TTI Insider: At Chakra Tirtha the water moves in a natural circular current - pilgrims have been noting this for centuries. You can complete the kund parikrama wading through the shallow water itself. Most visitors who come here have read about it in scripture their whole lives and never imagined they would actually stand in it. That is exactly how this place feels.

Morning Drive → Hanuman Garhi → Ram Mandir Darshan → Kanak Bhawan → Saryu ghat

Drive 130 km from Lucknow to Ayodhya with a natural stop for refreshments en route.
Arrive and go straight to Hanuman Garhi, then Ram Mandir for darshan at the birthplace of Lord Ram. Visit Kanak Bhawan and close the evening at Ram Ki Paidi on the Saryu. Overnight in Ayodhya.

TTI Insider: The new Ram Mandir has three floors - darshan queues take most visitors through the ground floor sanctum. If time and crowd allow, the upper floors offer a completely different view of the temple complex and the city around it. Ask your TTI rep if the upper levels are accessible on your visit day.

Triveni Sangam boat ride → Tarpan if desired → Drive to Varanasi

Drive from Ayodhya to Prayagraj for a boat ride at Triveni Sangam where three rivers meet. Take a ritual dip or Tarpan if you wish - priests at the ghat guide you through the correct vidhi.

Then drive on to Varanasi, arriving by late afternoon or early evening in time for the Ganga Aarti.

TTI Insider: At Triveni Sangam, from the boat you can see where the green Yamuna meets the grey-blue Ganga - two distinct rivers running side by side before becoming one. Ask your boatman to bring you close to that confluence line. It is one of those sights that is hard to describe afterwards but impossible to forget.

Sunrise boat ride → Kashi Vishwanath → Sankat Mochan → Tulsi Manas → Evening Ganga Aarti

Up before dawn for a boat ride on the Ganga. Then Kashi Vishwanath - one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. Afternoon at Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple and Tulsi Manas Mandir. Return to Dashashwamedh Ghat for the evening aarti [ optional]. Varanasi rewards a full day. Let it have one.

TTI Insider: Sankat Mochan Temple has a quality quite different from the famous ghats — quieter, intimate, and on certain evenings you will hear classical music being played inside the compound. Tulsidas is said to have worshipped here. After three days of major temples and cities, this place has a settling effect that our clients consistently remark on.

Final morning at Assi Ghat → Onward by train or flight

A last morning in the oldest living city on earth. Assi Ghat at dawn - quieter than Dashashwamedh, its own small aarti, a different quality of stillness. Then depart by train or flight to your home city. TTI assists with all onward arrangements.

TTI Insider: Assi Ghat has a small morning aarti that very few travellers know about - far less crowded than the famous evening ceremony, and for many of our clients, the more moving of the two. If your departure is afternoon, wake early and go there first. It is the right way to say goodbye to Varanasi.

You began in a forest where 88,000 sages once gathered.

You ended in a city that has never once stopped praying.

Everything in between was sacred geography that most people never think to travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is one of the most sacred tirthas in all of Hindu scripture — mentioned in the Mahabharata, Ramayana and multiple Puranas. The sages gathered here. Vyasa composed here. Sati's heart fell here. It is simply not well-known among modern tourists - which is exactly what makes it valuable. You will have the place largely to yourself in a way that is impossible at Varanasi or Ayodhya.

Yes — Prayagraj is one of the most sacred sites for Tarpan and ancestral rites. Authorised priests are available at the Sangam ghat. TTI can arrange this in advance. Priest charges are additional.

It is a long driving day — we will not pretend otherwise. But your vehicle is private and air-conditioned, the Sangam stop is about for 2 hours , and if you leave Ayodhya by 8–9am you arrive Varanasi comfortably by early evening. We have run this day many times and it works well. The arrival into Varanasi by evening makes it worthwhile.

Varanasi does not do ordinary — and neither does Hotel Four Elements. Two minutes from Banaras Railway Station, in the city where the Ganges has been receiving pilgrims for three thousand years — boutique interiors, THE AQUA restaurant and hospitality that feels genuinely rooted in this place rather than performed for it.
