Your private air-conditioned vehicle collects you from your Jaisalmer hotel at approximately 3:00 PM and drives you 45 kilometres west through the heart of the Thar Desert to Sam Sand Dunes. The road runs straight and flat through increasingly sparse scrubland — the landscape emptying around you as the city disappears behind. By the time you arrive, there is nothing in any direction except sand, sky and silence.

The drive takes approximately 45 minutes and is part of the experience — the gradual transition from city to pure desert is something you feel physically as well as see.

On arrival at Sam Sand Dunes your camel is waiting. You mount and ride slowly into the dunes — your guide leading you away from the road and deeper into the sand. The camels move at a gentle, rhythmic pace — surprisingly comfortable once you find your balance. Your guide knows exactly where the best viewpoints are and where the light falls most beautifully at this hour.

As the sun descends, the colour of the sand shifts from gold to deep amber to rose. You ride to the crest of the highest dune and stop. The desert stretches in every direction. There is no sound except wind and the occasional soft step of the camel. This is the moment.

As the light fades you are led back from the dunes to your luxury Swiss tent camp — set directly in the desert, away from the road and tourist areas. Your tent is waiting — fully furnished with proper beds, quality linen, electricity, a private attached bathroom with running hot water and all the comforts of a good hotel room. There is nothing "basic" about this camp. It is luxury that happens to be in the middle of the desert.

You freshen up, change for the evening and step outside to find the bonfire already lit, the musicians tuning their instruments and the sky beginning to fill with stars.

The evening's entertainment begins around the bonfire. Local Rajasthani folk musicians perform live — playing the khartal, sarangi and dholak, the instruments of the desert that have filled evenings like this for centuries. Traditional dancers in vivid colour perform beside them — the fire throwing their shadows long across the sand.

The performance runs for approximately 45 minutes and is genuinely mesmerising. Not a tourist show — this is music and dance that belongs to this place and these people. Many guests say this is the most authentic cultural experience of the entire tour.

Dinner is served under the open desert sky — the only included dinner on the entire 8-day tour, and by far the most memorable meal. The menu is a traditional Rajasthani feast — Dal Baati Churma, Ker Sangri, Bajra Roti, Gatte ki Sabzi and an array of Rajasthani sweets. Everything is freshly prepared at the camp.

You eat with the bonfire nearby, the folk music winding down, and a sky so thick with stars it is hard to believe you are on the same planet you left this morning. The Milky Way is visible from Sam Sand Dunes on clear nights — which is most nights between October and March.

Wake up before sunrise and step outside your tent into the cool desert morning. The light changes quickly in the Thar — from deep blue to pink to gold in the space of thirty minutes. The dunes look completely different from the night before. Quieter. More vast. The temperature is fresh and the air is completely still.

Breakfast is served at the camp before your driver arrives to take you back to Jaisalmer city — and from there, to Jaisalmer Airport for your return flight to Delhi on the final day of the tour.

Cool days, cold nights and crystal-clear skies. Camel safari in perfect light. Bonfire essential and magical. Stars are extraordinary — Milky Way visible on most nights. December and January are the coldest but most spectacular months. This is when the desert night experience is at its absolute best.

Daytime temperatures exceed 45°C. The camel safari must be done very early morning or after sunset — not at the golden hour. The desert night is still possible and still beautiful but the heat makes it significantly more demanding. Direct Jaisalmer flights are also limited during these months.

Jaisalmer receives some monsoon rain — rare but possible. The desert roads can be affected and the sand dunes change character significantly. The overnight camp experience is not recommended during monsoon months. If travelling July to September, the Lakes Route — Pushkar and Udaipur — is the better Rajasthan option.
