Eight days. Five legendary cities.
One journey that changes everything.

Most travellers come to India and see one or two cities. This itinerary gives you five — each one completely different from the last. You begin in the grand capital of Delhi, travel south to the Taj Mahal at Agra, swing west through the Pink City of Jaipur, dip south to the Blue City of Jodhpur, and end in Jaisalmer — the golden desert city at the edge of the Thar.

This guide takes you through every single day — what you will see, what you will experience, where you will stay, and what to expect. Whether you are planning your first trip to India or returning to finally do Rajasthan properly — this is the itinerary.

Is 7–8 Days Enough for the Golden Triangle Rajasthan Tour?

Seven to eight days is the ideal duration for this itinerary — long enough to experience each city properly, short enough to stay energised throughout. Many travellers ask whether they should extend to 10 or 12 days. Our honest answer: if this is your first visit, 8 days gives you the perfect balance. You will not feel rushed and you will not feel like you are running out of things to see.

The key is how the days are distributed. Delhi gets two days — one for arrival and orientation, one for full sightseeing. Agra gets a morning — which is all the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort require if you start early. Jaipur gets a full day. Jodhpur gets an afternoon and evening. Jaisalmer gets two days including the desert night. This pacing has been refined over years of running this exact tour.

If you have 10 or 12 days, consider our extended Rajasthan itinerary which adds Udaipur — the Lake City — and Pushkar to the route.

Route Map — Golden Triangle Rajasthan Itinerary

Best Time to Visit — Golden Triangle & Rajasthan

The timing of your Golden Triangle Rajasthan tour significantly affects the experience — particularly in Jodhpur and Jaisalmer where summer temperatures can be extreme. Here is a quick guide:

✅ Ideal — October to March

Pleasant temperatures across all five cities. Delhi and Agra are comfortable at 15–25°C. Rajasthan is at its most beautiful — cool nights, warm days, perfect for fort visits and desert evenings. December and January are peak season.

⚠️ Hot — April to June

Temperatures rise sharply — Jodhpur and Jaisalmer regularly exceed 44–46°C. Sightseeing is challenging. Jaisalmer direct flights are suspended. The tour is possible but demanding — early morning starts are essential.

🌧️ Monsoon — July to September

Delhi, Agra and Jaipur receive rainfall. Rajasthan's desert roads can be affected. However, the landscape turns surprisingly green and hotel rates are lowest. Not ideal for the desert camp experience.

🌟 Peak — December & January

The absolute best time — cool, dry and clear. Taj Mahal at sunrise is breathtaking in winter light. Desert nights at Jaisalmer are magical when temperatures drop. Book well in advance as this period sells out earliest.

How to Travel Between Delhi, Agra, Jaipur and Jaisalmer

This tour uses private road transfers between all cities except the final Jaisalmer to Delhi leg which is by flight. Here is a complete overview of transport options on this route — and why private road transfer is the best choice for this itinerary:

Route Private Car (This Tour) Train Bus
Delhi → Agra 3.5–4 hrs · Door to door · Stop en route 2 hrs · Fixed schedule · Station transfers needed 4–5 hrs · Crowded · Not recommended
Agra → Jaipur 4–4.5 hrs · Direct · Flexible departure No direct train · Change at Bharatpur 5–6 hrs · Limited comfort
Jaipur → Jodhpur 5–5.5 hrs · Comfortable · AC throughout 5–6 hrs · Good option but fixed schedule 6–7 hrs · Not recommended
Jodhpur → Jaisalmer 4.5–5 hrs · Scenic desert drive 5–6 hrs · Overnight option available 6+ hrs · Limited services
Jaisalmer → Delhi ✈️ Flight included (Oct–Mar) or via Jodhpur Overnight train — 18+ hours Not practical — 20+ hours

Private road transfer is the best choice for this itinerary because it gives you full flexibility — stop for photographs, visit roadside temples, adjust timing based on how long you spend at each monument. No waiting at stations, no luggage handling, no fixed timetables.

Your Journey — Day by Day

Follow the route from Delhi to the golden sands of Jaisalmer

Day 1
Arrive New Delhi The Capital

Your Golden Triangle Rajasthan adventure begins the moment you land at Indira Gandhi International Airport. Your TTI Tours guide will be waiting at arrivals — name board in hand — and will transfer you directly to your hotel in a private air-conditioned vehicle.

Day 1 is intentionally kept free for you to settle in, rest and recover from your journey. Delhi can be an overwhelming arrival — the scale, the sounds, the energy. Take the evening at your own pace. Step out for a walk if you feel rested, or simply relax and prepare for the extraordinary week ahead.

Pro Tip

If you arrive in the morning, ask your guide to show you Connaught Place for an introductory walk — Delhi's elegant colonial heart. A great low-intensity way to get your bearings on Day 1.

Day 2
Explore Old & New Delhi The Grand Capital

Delhi is not one city — it is many cities layered on top of each other across thousands of years. Today your expert guide takes you through both Old and New Delhi, weaving together Mughal grandeur, British colonial legacy and the beating heart of modern India.

🚗 Full day guided city tour — all transfers by private AC vehicle

Old Delhi begins at the magnificent Jama Masjid — India's largest mosque, built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in 1656. From here, climb aboard a classic cycle rickshaw and glide through the impossibly narrow lanes of Chandni Chowk — one of the oldest and busiest markets in Asia. Spice shops, jewellers, sweet stalls and street food vendors line every turn.

✦ Imagine This Moment

Your rickshaw weaves silently between the chaos of Chandni Chowk — the scent of cardamom and frying samosas hanging in the air, the sound of bells and bicycle horns, a city that has been trading in this exact spot for 400 years. This is the Old Delhi experience that photographs cannot capture.

New Delhi reveals a completely different face. Your guide takes you past India Gate — the solemn war memorial at the heart of the capital — before visiting the breathtaking Humayun's Tomb, the UNESCO-listed Mughal mausoleum that directly inspired the design of the Taj Mahal. Your final stop is the iconic Qutub Minar — the world's tallest brick minaret and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, rising 73 metres above the Delhi skyline.

Did You Know?

Humayun's Tomb was completed in 1572 and served as the direct architectural inspiration for the Taj Mahal — built 70 years later. Visiting both on this tour gives you a rare chance to see the evolution of Mughal architecture in real time.

In the evening, your private vehicle transfers you from Delhi to Agra — approximately 3.5 to 4 hours by road. You will arrive in Agra by evening, check in and rest ahead of tomorrow's most anticipated moment of the entire tour.

🏨 Stay: Comfortable standard hotel, Agra  |  🍳 Breakfast included
Day 3
Taj Mahal & Agra Fort → Jaipur The Mughal City

This is the day most travellers have been waiting for since the moment they booked. You will rise early — breakfast at the hotel — before heading to the Taj Mahal for a morning visit that will stay with you for the rest of your life.

⚠️
Important — Friday Closure

The Taj Mahal is closed every Friday. Your TTI Tours guide will ensure your visit is scheduled on the correct day. If your Day 3 falls on a Friday, the itinerary is adjusted accordingly — no disruption to your experience.

✦ Imagine This Moment

The first glimpse of the Taj Mahal through the Great Gate stops you completely. No photograph, no documentary, no description prepares you for what you feel in this moment. The white marble shimmers. The reflecting pool stretches before you. Your expert guide is beside you to tell you every story behind every detail of the world's greatest monument to love.

After the Taj Mahal, your guide leads you to Agra Fort — the magnificent red sandstone fortress that served as the main residence of the Mughal Emperors for generations. Walk through the royal chambers, audience halls and the heartbreaking Tower of Jasmine from which the imprisoned Emperor Shah Jahan spent his final years gazing at the Taj Mahal he had built for his wife.

Did You Know?

Emperor Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal as a mausoleum for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died in 1631. Construction took 22 years and involved over 20,000 artisans. Shah Jahan himself was later imprisoned in Agra Fort by his own son and spent his final years viewing his masterpiece from a distance.

After Agra Fort, your driver heads west on the Yamuna Expressway toward Jaipur — approximately 4.5 hours. You will arrive in the Pink City by early evening, with time to freshen up and explore the lit bazaars of Jaipur's old city at night.

Day 4
Explore Jaipur The Pink City

Jaipur — Rajasthan's capital and the jewel of the Golden Triangle — is a city built for spectacle. Founded in 1727 by Maharaja Jai Singh II, the entire old city was painted pink in 1876 to welcome the visiting Prince of Wales. The colour stuck. Today it is one of the most photographed cities in India — and one of the most rewarding to explore with a knowledgeable guide.

Your morning begins at Amber Fort (also known as Amer Fort) — the breathtaking hilltop palace-fortress that served as the seat of the Rajput Maharajas for centuries. Built from golden limestone and white marble, it rises dramatically above a lake with a mirror image reflected in the water below. Your guide will walk you through the ornate Sheesh Mahal (Hall of Mirrors), the Ganesh Gate and the private royal apartments.

✦ Imagine This Moment

You stand at the highest rampart of Amber Fort as the morning light floods across the Aravalli hills and the water of Maota Lake shimmers below. The guide's voice carries quietly as he tells you stories of the Maharajas who ruled from this very spot for 600 years. This is Rajasthan at its most royal and most alive.

The afternoon takes you into the heart of Jaipur's walled old city. Your guide walks you past the extraordinary Hawa Mahal — the Palace of Winds, with its 953 intricately carved windows designed so royal ladies could observe street life unseen — and into the lively bazaars of Johari Bazar and Bapu Bazar. Browse for Rajasthani gems, blue pottery, block-print textiles and the famous Jaipur lac bangles.

Jaipur's old city walls stretch over 6 kilometres and contain seven magnificent gates — each named after a different Rajput clan. The entire walled city of Jaipur was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019.

Amber Fort, Jaipur — one of Rajasthan's most spectacular royal forts, visited on Day 4

Day 5
Jaipur to Jodhpur The Blue City
🚗 Jaipur → Jodhpur by private AC vehicle — approx. 5.5 hours

The drive from Jaipur to Jodhpur takes you deeper into Rajasthan — past scrubland, ancient caravanserais, and small villages where camels still outnumber cars. You arrive in Jodhpur by afternoon — a city that hits you immediately with the sight of Mehrangarh Fort rising impossibly from a sheer rock face above a sea of blue-painted houses.

The afternoon is spent exploring Mehrangarh Fort — arguably the most spectacular fort in all of India. Built in 1459, its walls rise 36 metres from the rock below. Your guided tour takes you through seven magnificent gates, each built to commemorate a different Maharaja's military victory, and into the extraordinary royal apartments, armoury and museum housed within.

✦ Imagine This Moment

From the highest rampart of Mehrangarh, you look down over a sea of blue houses spreading in every direction — Jodhpur's Brahmin quarter, painted indigo centuries ago to cool homes and repel insects. The entire city is below you. The desert begins at the edges. There is no view in Rajasthan quite like this one.

In the evening, head into Jodhpur's old city and experience the Rajasthani cooking class — one of the most memorable experiences on this entire tour. A local chef guides you hands-on through preparing authentic Rajasthani dishes including Dal Baati Churma, Ker Sangri and Bajra Roti. You eat what you cook — a proper Rajasthani feast in a local home setting.

Did You Know?

Jodhpur's houses were traditionally painted indigo blue by Brahmin families to distinguish their homes. The colour also acts as a natural insect repellent and keeps interiors cool in Rajasthan's extreme summer heat — temperatures in Jodhpur can exceed 45°C in May and June.

🏨 Stay: Heritage boutique hotel, Jodhpur  |  🍳 Breakfast included
Day 6
Jodhpur to Jaisalmer The Golden City
🚗 Jodhpur → Jaisalmer by private AC vehicle — approx. 5 hours

Today's drive from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer is one of the most scenic journeys on the entire tour. The landscape gradually transforms — green scrubland giving way to golden sand, roadside villages becoming smaller and more remote, the desert announcing itself slowly and then completely. The road runs straight toward the Pakistani border through the heart of the Thar Desert.

You arrive in Jaisalmer by afternoon — a city that appears like a mirage rising from the desert floor. The entire old city is built from honey-gold Jaisalmer stone, giving it the name the Golden City. At its heart stands the extraordinary Jaisalmer Fort — one of the very few living forts in the world, with thousands of people still residing and trading within its ancient walls.

Spend the late afternoon exploring the fort — your guide will walk you through the royal palace, Jain temples dating back to the 12th century, and the extraordinary carved havelis (merchant mansions) of Patwon Ki Haveli and Salim Singh Ki Haveli, their sandstone facades carved with such intricate detail they appear almost like lace.

🏰
Did You Know?

Jaisalmer Fort is one of the largest fully preserved medieval forts in the world and one of only a handful of "living forts" — with approximately 4,000 people still living and running businesses within its walls. It was built in 1156 AD by Rawal Jaisal and has never been completely abandoned in nearly 900 years.

Day 7
Sam Sand Dunes — Jaisalmer The Desert Night

Day 7 is the day that guests talk about most when they return home. The morning is free to explore Jaisalmer at your own pace — wander the fort lanes, browse the desert craft shops, or simply sit on a rooftop café watching the golden city come alive.

🚗 Jaisalmer → Sam Sand Dunes — approx. 45 minutes

In the late afternoon, your driver takes you to Sam Sand Dunes — the most spectacular stretch of the Thar Desert, approximately 45 kilometres from Jaisalmer city. As the sun begins its descent, you mount a camel and ride into the dunes — the silence of the desert broken only by the soft padding of camel feet on sand and the distant call of birds. The sunset at Sam Sand Dunes, watched from the top of a dune, is one of the most beautiful sights in all of India.

✦ Imagine This Moment

The sun melts into the horizon in shades of deep orange and rose. Your camel stands silhouetted against the sky. The Thar Desert stretches in every direction. There is no sound but the wind. This is the moment you came to India for.

As night falls, you are welcomed at your luxury Swiss tent camp — a fully furnished tent with proper beds, attached bathroom and electricity, set directly in the desert. The evening unfolds around a roaring bonfire as Rajasthani folk musicians and dancers perform under a sky so thick with stars it feels unreal. Dinner is a traditional Rajasthani feast served under the open desert sky — the only included dinner on this tour and one you will never forget.

Pro Tip

Bring a light jacket or shawl for the desert night — even in winter months the temperature drops sharply after sunset. The stars at Sam Sand Dunes are extraordinary — bring a good camera and turn it skyward after the folk dance show ends.

Day 8
Jaisalmer → New Delhi & Depart Journey's End

Your final morning in the desert. Wake up to sunrise over the sand dunes — there is nothing quite like morning light on the Thar. After breakfast at the camp, your driver transfers you back to Jaisalmer city for your onward journey to Delhi.

✈️ Important — Seasonal Flight Information

The return from Jaisalmer to New Delhi operates differently depending on the season you travel:

🌿 October to March (Peak Season)

Direct flight from Jaisalmer Airport (JSA) to Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL). Flight time approx. 1.5 to 2 hours. TTI Tours arranges airport transfer at both ends.

☀️ April to September (Off Season)

Jaisalmer becomes extremely hot (45°C+) and direct flights are limited. Return is by private AC vehicle from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur (approx. 5 hours), then flight from Jodhpur Airport (JDH) to Delhi. Your TTI Tours team will confirm exact arrangements at booking.

Upon arrival in New Delhi, your TTI Tours representative will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your onward flight or to a Delhi hotel if you are extending your stay. Your Golden Triangle Rajasthan journey ends here — but the memories will stay considerably longer.
