Travel Itinerary

Ekambareswarar → Kamakshi Amman → Kailasanathar → Arunachaleswarar darshan → Overnight Thiruvannamalai

Leave Chennai and stop at Kanchipuram - one of India's seven sacred cities. Visit Ekambareswarar Temple, Kamakshi Amman and Kailasanathar. Then drive to Thiruvannamalai.

Arrive in time for evening darshan at Arunachaleswarar Temple - where the entire Arunachala hill behind it is considered Lord Shiva himself, not a symbol but the actual form. Overnight in Thiruvannamalai.

TTI Insider: Inside Ekambareswarar Temple is a mango tree believed to be 3,500 years old, under which the goddess Kamakshi is said to have performed penance. It grows within the temple compound and still bears fruit. Most visitors walk past it without realising its significance. Ask your TTI guide to point it out - it takes thirty seconds and changes how you see the rest of the temple.

Dawn Girivalam of Arunachala Drive to Trichy Rockfort Temple Srirangam

Wake at dawn for the Girivalam - the 14 km circumambulation of Arunachala hill, walked barefoot on the pradakshina path around the base. The hill is Lord Shiva. Walking around it is a pradakshina of Shiva himself.
Then drive to Trichy - Rockfort Ucchi Pillayar Temple on its granite summit, and Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple at Srirangam - the largest functioning temple complex in the world. Overnight Trichy.

TTI Insider: Girivalam at dawn takes 3–4 hours at a gentle pace. Most serious pilgrims walk barefoot - the path is well-maintained and manageable. The hill changes colour as the sun rises: grey-blue in darkness, red-orange at dawn, pale gold by mid-morning. If you are only going to walk one pradakshina in Tamil Nadu, this is the one.

Drive to Palani → Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple → Hilltop darshan → Overnight Palani

Drive from Trichy to Palani. At Arulmigu Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple, Lord Murugan stands alone on his hilltop - no consort, no vehicle, in the form of a young ascetic who renounced all worldly things.

Reach the hilltop by rope car or by climbing the 693 steps - your choice. Darshan at the main sanctum. The view of the surrounding plains from the hilltop is the kind that makes the climb feel obvious. Overnight in Palani.

TTI Insider: The Palani hilltop has two main darshan queues - general and special. TTI recommends the special darshan ticket for a closer, less crowded view of the deity. The Panchamritam - the sacred prasad made of five natural ingredients, prepared only at Palani - is available at the temple and considered highly auspicious. Do not leave without receiving it.

Drive to Madurai → Meenakshi Amman Temple Darshan → Evening at temple

Drive from Palani to Madurai. Arrive and go directly to Meenakshi Amman Temple - 14 gopurams, corridors that go on further than you expect, and a goddess who has been here for two thousand years. Visit the main sanctums of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar.

The evening temple atmosphere from 5pm, when the inner corridors fill with lamps and music, is the most powerful time to be here. Overnight in Madurai.

TTI Insider: Meenakshi Amman Temple closes between 12:30pm and 4pm daily. Plan your Day 4 arrival to reach either before noon for a morning visit, or after 4pm for the evening. The evening is significantly more atmospheric — the corridor lights, the music, the density of devotion after the afternoon closure all peak at dusk.

Morning Darshan Meenakshi → Thiruparankundram → Alagar Kovil → Evening at Madurai temples

A full day in Madurai. Morning darshan at Meenakshi Amman - a second visit at a different time of day shows you a different temple.

Then Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple - the first Arupadai Veedu, rock-cut into a hill 8 km from Madurai, quiet and ancient. Alagar Kovil - Lord Vishnu's forest temple 20 km from Madurai, in a completely different atmosphere.

Return to Madurai for the evening. Overnight in Madurai.

TTI Insider: Alagar Kovil sits at the edge of the Alagar Hills - lush, forested, completely unlike the plains temples on this route. The drive there takes you through a different landscape entirely. After five days of large temple complexes and city streets, the green hill setting of Alagar Kovil has a settling effect that many clients find the most peaceful moment of the entire tour.

Morning at leisure → Onward by train or flight

A free final morning in Madurai before departure. If your flight or train is afternoon, the Meenakshi Amman Temple morning darshan — quieter than the previous days, when you know the corridors already — has a different quality. Depart by train or flight to your onward destination. TTI assists with all arrangements.

TTI Insider: Madurai airport has direct flights to several Indian cities. If you are flying back to Chennai, Mumbai or Bengaluru, check morning flight options — the airport is small and easy to navigate, and morning flights are often the smoothest. TTI will confirm your onward logistics the evening before departure.

  • Kanchipuram taught you the antiquity of Tamil faith.
  • Arunachala showed you what it means when a mountain is a god.
  • Srirangam showed you the scale of devotion made into architecture.
  • Madurai reminded you that none of this has ever stopped.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Girivalam is 14 km around the base of Arunachala hill and takes 3–4 hours at a comfortable pace. The path is mostly flat, well-maintained and clearly marked. Most pilgrims walk barefoot as a matter of devotion, though shoes are permitted. Elderly or less mobile family members can choose to do a shorter section or visit the main temple while others complete the circuit. TTI plans the timing so you walk in the cooler early morning hours.

The Palani hilltop temple sits on a rocky hill about 150 metres above the town. The 693 steps is the traditional way up — a physical act of devotion. The rope car (winch car) is a cable car that takes about 3 minutes. Both arrive at the same hilltop. Elderly or less mobile pilgrims typically use the rope car. Those who are able, and wish to offer the climb as seva, take the steps. TTI leaves this entirely to the client's choice.

Srirangam covers 156 acres and has seven concentric enclosure walls — exploring it fully could take a full day. For this tour we plan 2–3 hours at Srirangam, which covers the main sanctum, the thousand-pillared hall and the outer corridors. This is sufficient for a meaningful pilgrimage visit. If Srirangam is your specific priority, TTI can build an extended Trichy itinerary with an extra night.

Yes. Clients frequently join this tour from Bengaluru, Hyderabad or directly to Kanchipuram or Thiruvannamalai. TTI adjusts the pickup point accordingly. The tour can also begin from Madurai and run in reverse — Chennai departure instead of arrival. Tell us your preference at booking.

Arunachala — the hill that Shaivites believe is Shiva himself — rises directly outside. Hotel Himalayaa sits in the heart of a city that finds mention in literature from 100 BC, at the foot of one of the Pancha Bhuta Sthalas. Practical, personal, unhurried — exactly the right tone for a place where pilgrims come seeking moksha.
